UV and houseplants: distinguish the types of lighting
A visible grow light is not the same as a UV source. Do not choose ultraviolet equipment for a houseplant based solely on a promise of better growth.
Identify what the equipment does
Check the stated spectrum and intended use in the instructions. A disinfection device is not a fixture for lighting your plant collection. A visible LED described as “full spectrum” does not prove that it emits UVB.
Follow the conditions of use carefully
Follow the protective measures, installation instructions and occupancy conditions specified by the UV device manufacturer. Do not deliberately expose eyes, skin or animals to equipment outside those conditions. This guide does not provide a UV exposure protocol for plants.
Choose lighting suited to the need
For indoor plant equipment, see grow lights and the lighting guide. For a reptile terrarium, UVB serves a different purpose: read the guide to UVB for reptiles.
