UVB for reptiles: choosing a source and checking the setup

Choose a UVB source for the species and terrarium setup. Distance, reflector, mesh and retreat areas all affect exposure.

Identify the exact equipment

Check the manufacturer’s information for the source, fixture, reflector and accessories. The Arcadia ProT5 instructions describe specific equipment and installations; do not apply its distances to any tube. Compare UVB equipment by its exact reference.

Check actual exposure

The percentage printed on a lamp is not enough to choose a distance for every reptile. Match the setup to the species’ needs and documented recommendations. Provide suitable zones and retreat options for the animal. Glass or mesh may change exposure, so consult the instructions.

Do not confuse the functions

Visible horticultural LED lighting does not replace a dedicated UVB source. Nor is a UVB source automatically the heat source required. The guide to LEDs, UVB and heat distinguishes these functions; for plants, see terrarium LEDs.

Installation and follow-up

Record the reference, installation date and distances. Check the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance and any changes to the animal’s position. Do not extrapolate a replacement interval or health promise to an entire product range.
