Green manure and tropical potted plants: two different uses

Agricultural green manure is a crop used for soil management; it is not a fertiliser to pour into a tropical plant’s pot. Here is how to avoid confusion.

Clarify the term “green manure”

The term usually refers to plants grown for soil management in a garden or in agriculture. It does not tell you how much nutrition to provide to a Monstera or Alocasia in a room.

Choose for the pot and plant

For houseplants, browse fertilisers for foliage plants and the tropical fertilising guide. Record nutrients already in the substrate, recent applications and the plant’s activity.

Do not promise an automatic fix

Discolouration or slow growth can have several causes. Read the plant deficiency diagnosis method before applying more fertiliser. This page distinguishes different uses and does not transfer an agricultural process to potted plants.
