Plants and indoor humidity: what they can do

A houseplant does not replace ventilation or equipment intended to address excess humidity. Choose plants for their growing needs, not a promise to dehumidify.

Do not confuse a tropical plant with a dehumidifier

A plant’s water exchange and a room’s conditions cannot support a promise that a pot will absorb a useful amount of household humidity. A list of supposedly “humidity-absorbing” plants is not a dehumidification measurement. Plants can also release water into the air through transpiration.

Assess the room and location

Measure the air, identify available light and check ventilation. A damp room without a window is not automatically a suitable plant habitat. The guide to a windowless bathroom explains why a light source is needed.

Choose equipment to suit the plants

For a plant affected by dry air, read the guide to plant humidity and browse humidifiers. These devices and uses differ from treating excessive humidity. Do not turn plant selection into medical advice or a guarantee that a home will be purified.
