Humidity for tropical plants: measure and respond

Measure the air near your plants before choosing what to do. Suitable humidity depends on the species and setup; one level does not suit every collection.

Take useful readings

Place a hygrometer near the foliage and note changes during the day, including when heating or ventilation is running. Distinguish relative air humidity from substrate moisture: an air hygrometer does not tell you when a pot needs watering.

Misting does not automatically stabilise the air

Occasional misting cannot guarantee a lasting humidity level. Check readings, ventilation and the species’ conditions before increasing misting. Keeping surfaces constantly wet is not suitable for every plant.

Choose equipment for the area

Compare humidifiers for your setup, checking capacity, controls, maintenance and permitted environment. The guide to choosing a humidifier for plants distinguishes humidification from monitoring. For a cabinet, start with designing a tropical indoor display.

Keep the wider picture in view

Also recheck lighting, watering and drainage. In winter, the seasonal care guide helps adapt your checks. The watering guide concerns the substrate, which is different from the air in the room.
