Substrates for carnivorous plants: choose for the species

Carnivorous plants do not all grow in the same mix. Their substrate and water requirements differ from those of tropical foliage plants.

Identify the plant before choosing a mix

A Venus flytrap, a Sarracenia and a Nepenthes do not automatically have the same growing conditions. The RHS describes specialist low-nutrient substrates and also mentions peat-free options. No universal recipe, or claim that peat is essential, applies to every case.

Read the ingredients

Check the stated use, added fertiliser and manufacturer’s recommendations. Do not replace a specialist mix with fertilised potting soil for aroids. Compare available substrates only when the stated use matches the species.

Light and watering are also species-specific

The Nepenthes lighting setup guide covers a different use from ordinary tropical pots. For lighting equipment, compare plant lights according to mounting and instructions; do not apply settings for another species.
