Yellowing flowers: distinguish natural change from a problem

Flower colour can change naturally, but an unusual change warrants observation. Flowers and leaves should not automatically be diagnosed in the same way.

Check what is normal for the species

Identify the plant, the flower’s age and its usual colour as it blooms. A flower nearing the end of its life has different needs from a bud that fails to open. Note any changes of location and recent care.

Look at the whole plant

Check the substrate, drainage, temperatures and pests. If the foliage is yellowing too, see the yellow-leaf diagnosis. If the plant is dropping buds, also record moves and available light.

Avoid automatic treatment

Do not add a “bloom” fertiliser based on colour alone. Follow the product’s intended use and seek horticultural advice if the change persists. The fertilising guide outlines what to check, while the lighting guide can help assess the location.
